Green Schools

We are currently working towards our green flag. Our focus is waste management. To date we have:

  1. Formed a committee from our school community and held meetings
  2. Carried out an environmental review
  3. Children and staff have recorded our waste and identified our targets for reduction.
  4. To date we have reduced our waste by half and doubled our recycling and composting.
  5. Children have learned about recycling in class and to further this hard work we have made a visit to Corranure Recycling Facility and met with staff who informed them about the work in the facility.
  6. We have held an information night for parents to extend the education into the homes.
  7. We have made a ‘green film’ as part of our European project, which is displayed, on our international Comenius website.
  8. We have undertaken clean-ups (in our school environs) on the road and hedges close to our school and planted trees in our school grounds.
  9. Also in association with our active schools we undertook a ‘walking bus’ to school, which included pupils, staff and parents.

Our green notice board displays information in relation to our ongoing ‘green’ campaign and this includes battery and clothes collection for recycling.

Our green code is a statement of our schools commitment to the environment:

"Corlurgan NS is committed to promoting and developing the green initiative and maintaining good green habits and an awareness of our environment."

June 2013 - Green Flag Raised at Corlurgan NS

Corlurgan N.S. finished the school year on a high note when they recently raised their Green Flag for Litter & Waste. The children, parents and invited guests joined together to celebrate the event in bright sunshine. As part of their Green Flag programme, Corlurgan has reduced its waste by seventy five percent, has recycled up to forty kilos of batteries and supplied bedding to a very happy local pig and a family of ferrets from its shredded paper. The sunflowers and hedgerows are thriving, helped by the home-grown compost. The flag was raised by John Donohoe recently voted ‘Cavan Person of the Year’ by Anglo Celt readers. John paid tribute to the Green Committee, the staff, pupils and parents of Corlurgan for their wonderful achievement!
